Review BMW K 1600 Grand America (2026)
The Full Dresser for Riders Who Refuse to Compromise on Highway Touring
BMW built the Grand America for riders who like the bagger style of the K 1600 B but do not want to search the options catalog for a top case, floorboards, audio system, reverse assist, and heated seats. It is the most comprehensively equipped flagship of the K 1600 family—bagger character with full-dresser equipment. 160 hp, 162 km/h (101 mph) top speed, electronically limited, everything standard. From €30,045.
As of: April 12, 2026 | Tested model: BMW K 1600 Grand America (2026) | Price from: €30,045
Engine: Same Inline-Six as the Entire K 1600 Family—162 km/h Instead of 200 km/h
1,649 cc, inline-six, liquid-cooled, transversely mounted, Euro 5. 118 kW (160 hp) at 6,750 rpm, 180 Nm at 5,250 rpm. Identical to the GT, GTL, and B.
The only difference compared with the K 1600 B is that the Grand America is electronically limited to 162 km/h. The reason is safety: at higher speeds, the large top case creates aerodynamic turbulence that can affect stability. This is a deliberate design decision that reflects the motorcycle’s intended use: not for flat-out autobahn runs, but for relaxed highway cruising.
160 hp in a motorcycle limited to 162 km/h may sound like a waste, but that misses the point. At touring speeds between 80 and 130 km/h, the power is always there in abundance, while the six-cylinder runs effortlessly and with exceptional refinement.
Three riding modes are included: Rain, Road, and Dynamic. There is also a Cruise mode that activates an especially soft suspension setting for maximum comfort.
MSR engine drag torque control comes standard. Shift Assistant Pro is included in the optional Comfort Package.
Chassis: Duolever, Dynamic ESA, Reverse Assist Standard—Essential at 364 kg
BMW Duolever up front with a centrally mounted shock and 115 mm of travel. At the rear is a cast-aluminum single-sided swingarm with Paralever and 125 mm of travel.
Dynamic ESA Next Generation comes standard: semi-active suspension control with automatic load detection and two damping modes, Road and Cruise.
The Grand America’s chassis is fundamentally identical to the K 1600 B’s—same lowered rear subframe, same Duolever.
The major difference is the additional load. The top case and full-dresser equipment increase weight to around 364 kg. Dynamic ESA automatically adjusts the suspension when carrying two people.
Reverse assist comes standard—and at 364 kg, this is not a luxury feature, it is essential. Activate it with a button on the left handlebar switchgear, press the starter button, and the motorcycle slowly moves backward. Use it once and you will never want to be without it.
Braking comes from dual 320 mm front discs with fixed four-piston calipers and a 320 mm rear disc. ABS Pro comes standard and is lean-angle optimized.
Hill Start Control Pro comes standard. Tire Pressure Control (RDC) is also standard.
As for stability: when riding solo, a slight and harmless weave can begin above 140 km/h. That is the reason for the 162 km/h speed limiter.
With a passenger, the Grand America is considerably more stable because the weight distribution is better balanced. For its intended operating range—touring speeds between 100 and 140 km/h—handling is impeccable.
Ergonomics: Feet-Forward Position, Tall Windscreen, Top Case With Passenger Backrest Standard
Rider seat height is 750 mm, while the passenger seat is positioned 70 mm lower. The lowered rear subframe makes it easier for a passenger to climb aboard than on the GTL or GT.
Floorboards come standard and provide the rider with a relaxed feet-forward position—legs stretched well forward, wide handlebar positioned close to the rider, upper body upright. This is the American long-distance touring position, designed to remain comfortable over 500 km. The especially tall, electrically adjustable windscreen provides excellent protection at touring speeds up to around 140 km/h.
Standard equipment includes a top case with passenger backrest and additional speakers, plus a USB-A port in the top case; Audio System 2.0 with DAB+ and selectable sound profiles; a charging compartment with USB-C; heated rider and passenger seats; heated grips; a 10.25-inch color TFT display with navigation; adaptive LED cornering lights; E-Call; a dual-tone horn; and four configurable favorite buttons.
This is the most comprehensive standard equipment package in the K 1600 family.
No other model comes with this much equipment straight from the factory.
Handling: 364 kg—the Heaviest K 1600, but Surprisingly Manageable Once Moving
364 kg fully fueled—that makes the Grand America one of the heaviest motorcycles BMW currently builds. At a standstill and while maneuvering at walking speed, that is a serious challenge. Standard reverse assist takes the sting out of the most difficult situations.
Once moving and up to touring speed, however, the Grand America is surprisingly precise and predictable thanks to its Duolever suspension and low center of gravity.
It is a motorcycle that flows through corners with far more dignity and control than its dimensions would suggest.
The refined six-cylinder torque delivery is a major help. Throttle response is smooth, and the engine pushes forward effortlessly without jerking. The Grand America is the right motorcycle for riders who travel together and refuse to compromise on comfort for either rider or passenger.
Solo riders who prefer more dynamic backroad handling will be better served by the K 1600 GT or GTL. The Grand America is unapologetically focused on sharing the long-distance experience.
Equipment: The Most Complete Standard Package in the K 1600 Family—and Then There’s Still the Comfort Package
Standard equipment includes Dynamic ESA Next Generation, ABS Pro, MSR, traction control, Hill Start Control Pro, RDC tire-pressure monitoring, reverse assist, adaptive cornering lights, tall electrically adjustable windscreen, Audio System 2.0 with DAB+, top case with passenger backrest and additional speakers plus USB-A, saddlebags, floorboards, engine protection bars, heated seats, heated grips, charging compartment with USB-C, 10.25-inch TFT with navigation, E-Call, dual-tone horn, four favorite buttons, and Rain/Road/Dynamic/Cruise riding modes.
The optional Comfort Package adds Keyless Ride, central locking, Shift Assistant Pro, and the anti-theft alarm system.
Color options include Mineral Gray Metallic Matte, which is new, and Option 719 Casablanca—Ionic Silver Metallic with black hand-painted pinstriping.
Costs: €30,045—the Most Expensive K 1600, but Less Than a Harley Ultra Limited or Indian Roadmaster
The base price is €30,045 plus additional charges. The K 1600 B starts at €27,290—a difference of €2,755 for the Grand America’s comprehensive standard equipment.
Configure a K 1600 B to a similar equipment level with the Touring Package, heated seats, and RDC, and its price approaches that of the Grand America.
The direct American competitors: Harley-Davidson Road Glide from €32,600, Indian Roadmaster from €34,690. The Grand America costs less than either while offering 160 hp, Duolever suspension, and electronic chassis technology at a level the American products do not match.
Service intervals are every 10,000 km, with costs ranging from €600 to €900. Shaft drive requires little routine maintenance. Warranty: two years with unlimited mileage.
Verdict
The BMW K 1600 Grand America is the best-equipped production motorcycle BMW currently builds. Full-dresser equipment from the factory, 160 hp inline-six, Duolever suspension, reverse assist, top case with speakers—no accessory catalog required.
The 162 km/h top speed is an honest limitation. This motorcycle was not designed for racing down the autobahn. It was designed to glide across long distances in maximum comfort, preferably two-up. Understand that concept and you will struggle to find a better package in Europe.
