As of: April 10, 2026 | Tested model: BMW R 1300 RT (2026) | Price from: €22,890
Engine: 145 hp Boxer—Refined, Powerful, Characterful
The same air/liquid-cooled two-cylinder boxer with BMW ShiftCam used in the R 1300 GS, R, and RS: 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm, 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The boxer is an engine that finds its most natural home in a touring motorcycle. The broad torque plateau from 2,500 rpm makes overtaking possible without downshifting, ShiftCam ensures smooth power delivery across the entire rev range, and the characteristic boxer reaction torque when opening and closing the throttle creates a riding sensation no other tourer offers.
Shift Assistant Pro comes standard, allowing clutchless upshifts and downshifts. The Automated Shift Assistant, ASA, is optional and takes complete control of the clutch and gear changes. In ASA Comfort mode, the RT rides like an automatic: no clutch operation, no manual gear selection, just open the throttle and enjoy. In manual mode, the rider retains control over gear selection while the system operates the clutch. For long-distance touring riders, this is a genuine comfort advantage, particularly on long highway stretches where little shifting is required.
Three riding modes come standard: Rain, Road, and Eco. The optional Riding Modes Pro package adds Dynamic and Dynamic Pro. In Dynamic Pro mode, the engine works closely with the optional DCA chassis system—more on that in the chassis section. Shaft drive remains a central argument for the boxer concept: no chain maintenance, no chain adjustment, no chain lubricant.
Chassis: DCA—the RT Changes Its Own Geometry
This is the R 1300 RT’s technical sensation: Dynamic Chassis Adaptation, or DCA, an optional chassis system that adjusts not only damping and spring rate, but the motorcycle’s geometry itself.
In Comfort mode, the RT runs with a shallower steering-head angle and more trail: maximum stability, calm straight-line behavior, effortless highway cruising.
In Dynamic Pro mode, the rear rises by around 30 mm and the front by approximately 8 mm. That steepens the steering-head angle, reduces trail, and makes the RT noticeably more eager to turn and more agile.
Two motorcycles in one. Dynamic ESA comes standard—the semi-active suspension system that automatically adjusts rear damping and spring preload according to riding mode. That alone is already a substantial advantage over conventional touring motorcycles with manually adjustable suspension.
DCA goes further, combining DSA functions such as spring-rate adjustment and load compensation with geometry adjustment. Test riders have described this system as the most convincing chassis advance in RT history. In Dynamic Pro mode, the RT’s agility exceeds what you would expect from a 281 kg touring motorcycle.
Front-wheel control comes through EVO Telelever with a flex element—the familiar BMW principle that decouples handlebar tilt from suspension movement, separates braking from suspension action, and minimizes front-end dive under braking. At the rear is EVO Paralever with a cast-aluminum single-sided swingarm and continuous swingarm pivot axle. Suspension travel is 149 mm at the front and 158 mm at the rear.
Braking comes from dual 310 mm front discs with radially mounted fixed four-piston calipers and a single rear disc with a two-piston floating caliper, controlled by Fully Integral ABS Pro. Brake response is deliberately soft and extremely easy to modulate—the right decision for a 281 kg touring motorcycle. An optional sport brake with titanium-colored calipers is available.
Ergonomics: 780 mm Seat Height Is Possible—and Variable Wind Deflectors for the First Time
Standard seat height with the two-piece seat is 820 mm, or 840 mm in the high setting. With the low comfort seat, 780/800 mm is possible, while the high comfort seat raises that to 840/860 mm. BMW offers a broad seat program that makes the RT accessible to riders of widely different heights, and this is a classic RT strength.
The riding position has been made slightly more dynamic compared with the R 1250 RT. The rider sits a little closer to the steering head, while the footpegs are positioned slightly farther back. It is a subtle shift. Anyone who loved the character of the old RT will quickly feel at home.
The R 1300 RT’s wind-protection system is the most sophisticated BMW has ever installed on a production motorcycle. The electrically adjustable windscreen, adjustable for both height and angle, comes standard. New and optional are variable wind deflectors: hinged sections of the side fairing that can be moved outward for greater protection or inward for better ventilation in hot weather. This is an engineering solution to a long-standing touring problem. With the 2026 RT, weather protection and ventilation no longer have to be mutually exclusive.
Passenger equipment is where the RT most clearly demonstrates its strength. The optional Comfort Passenger Package includes heated comfort seats for rider and passenger, heated passenger grab handles, a heated top-case backrest, and wider comfort footpegs. That sounds luxurious—and it is. Anyone who regularly covers long distances two-up understands the value. The RT comes standard as a two-person motorcycle with sturdy grab handles and a generously sized passenger seat.
Handling: 281 kg, 10.25-Inch Display, 24-Liter Tank—the RT by the Numbers
281 kg fully fueled. That is the weight of the R 1300 RT. It is substantial, and at a standstill it feels substantial. BMW has improved mass centralization with the compact 1,300 cc boxer and transmission positioned beneath the engine, while new wheels reduce unsprung mass by 1.4 kg. An electric reverse gear is optional. For garage maneuvers and tight parking with a motorcycle weighing almost 300 kg, it is a welcome assistance feature.
Once the RT starts rolling, the weight becomes much less significant. In Dynamic Pro mode, the DCA chassis makes the RT feel more agile than its mass suggests.
The 10.25-inch TFT is the largest display BMW has installed on a production motorcycle. It presents all relevant information clearly, supports integrated map navigation, and is operated through the Multi-Controller. An actively ventilated smartphone compartment with USB-C charging comes standard. An optional audio system turns the RT into a rolling living room.
The 24-liter fuel tank provides around 460 km of range at consumption of approximately 5 liters per 100 km. That is excellent for a tourer and significantly reduces fuel stops on long riding days. The optional Riding Assistant with Active Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning, Side Warning, and Rear-End Collision Warning using rear radar is the most comprehensive rider-assistance package BMW has ever installed on a touring motorcycle. Anyone covering 30,000 km a year on highways will find genuine relief here.
ACC automatically regulates speed and following distance, while the side warning alerts the rider to vehicles in the blind spot when signaling a lane change.
This is useful long-distance safety technology.

Costs: €22,890 Base—Clearly Positioned in the Luxury Segment
The German base price is €22,890. For comparison, BMW’s K 1600 models and the Honda Gold Wing DCT at around €32,000 are competitors. A direct list-price comparison in the premium touring segment is difficult, however, because the concepts and equipment levels differ too widely. If you want a full-size luxury boxer tourer with shaft drive, there are very few alternatives to the BMW R 1300 RT.
Service is required every 10,000 km and costs around €450 to €650.
Shaft-drive service is required every 60,000 km. Valve-clearance inspection is required every 20,000 km and costs around €650 to €950. The used-bike market shows stable prices. Fully equipped R 1300 RTs are being offered at close to new-bike prices, indicating sustained demand. Warranty: two years with unlimited mileage.
Verdict
The BMW R 1300 RT is the most technologically advanced touring motorcycle BMW has ever built—and with the optional DCA chassis, the world’s first production touring motorcycle capable of changing its own chassis geometry. That justifies the price and the complexity. If you are buying a tourer, this is the best available in 2026.
If you regularly ride 1,000-km days, travel two-up, value comfort and dynamics equally, and are prepared to pay for the best, this is the motorcycle.
