The 2026 Super Chief Dark Horse update is cosmetic. The new Chalk color—a light off-white—is the most visible change, an unexpected addition to an otherwise typically dark Dark Horse color program. Revised tank graphics are also new. Engine, chassis, and equipment are technically identical to the 2025 model.

Super Chief Dark Horse vs. Super Chief Limited: A Finish Decision

As with every Dark Horse-versus-Limited comparison, the motorcycles are technically identical. The Super Chief Dark Horse uses black finishes on the engine and exhaust, black leather saddlebags, and a restrained, dark appearance. The Super Chief Limited adds chrome elements and a broader, brighter color palette. If you want chrome, buy the Limited. If you want the touring cruiser in a dark finish, buy the Dark Horse.

Super Chief Dark Horse vs. Chief Dark Horse: The Key Differences

There are several Dark Horse models within the Indian Chief family. The Chief Dark Horse, with its 19-inch cast front wheel, drag bar, solo setup, and no touring equipment, and the Super Chief Dark Horse, with 16-inch wire-spoke wheels, touring handlebar, floorboards, saddlebags, windshield, and passenger seat, represent two different philosophies. The Chief Dark Horse is the purist version—lighter at 304 versus 335 kg and less expensive. The Super Chief Dark Horse is the touring model: more weight, more comfort, more equipment. The Super Chief Dark Horse produces 156 Nm at 2,900 rpm, while the Chief Dark Horse makes 163 Nm at 2,900 rpm. The Chief Dark Horse has slightly more torque due to different tuning.

Engine: Thunderstroke 116 in Super Chief Tune

1,890 cc, air- and oil-cooled, OHV, 88 hp / 66 kW, 156 Nm at 2,900 rpm, Ride-by-Wire, rear-cylinder deactivation, six-speed transmission, belt final drive, Euro 5+. In the Super Chief, the Thunderstroke 116 is tuned for touring comfort: a deep, broad torque curve, effortless cruising without constant downshifts, and no aggressive power peak.

One hundred fifty-six Newton-meters at 2,900 rpm means this: second gear, 30 km/h as you enter a backroad, roll on the throttle—and the Super Chief pulls forward without hesitation. That is classic Thunderstroke character in a touring package. Fuel consumption is approximately 4.5–5.0 L/100 km; the 15.1-liter tank provides around 280 km of range.

Chassis, Wire-Spoke Wheels, and Brakes

Up front is a 46 mm telescopic fork with 132 mm of travel and fork covers. At the rear are twin shocks with adjustable spring preload, 75 mm of travel, and shock covers. Forty-spoke 16-inch wire wheels are fitted front and rear, with Metzeler Cruisetec tires in 130/90B16 front and 180/65B16 rear sizes. Braking comes from a 300 mm front disc with a four-piston caliper and a 300 mm rear disc with a two-piston caliper. ABS and linked braking come standard.

The 40-spoke wheels are a defining design feature of the Super Chief and immediately distinguish it from the Chief Dark Horse with its cast front wheel and the Chief Bobber Dark Horse with its 16-inch wire-spoke setup. For longer-distance touring, the Super Chief’s wire-wheel setup with tubeless tires offers a practical advantage: a puncture can be repaired with a standard repair kit.

Ergonomics: Touring Position, 665 mm Seat Height

Seat height is 665 mm and wheelbase 1,626 mm. The touring handlebar is wider and higher than the Chief Dark Horse’s, while floorboards replace the Chief Dark Horse’s mid-mounted footpegs. On long highway stretches, the floorboards allow a more relaxed leg position and let the rider move the feet farther forward.

A passenger seat, passenger footpegs, and passenger grab handles come standard. Within the Chief family, the Super Chief Dark Horse is the model most consistently designed around long-distance comfort for both rider and passenger.

Equipment: Everything Is Included

Black leather saddlebags, removable and lockable, come standard, as does a quick-release windshield, although it is not adjustable. A 4-inch RIDE COMMAND touchscreen with GPS, Bluetooth, and Ride-by-Wire riding modes is standard, along with keyless ignition, cruise control, ABS, rear-cylinder deactivation, USB, full LED lighting, a headlight nacelle, and the fully blacked-out Dark Horse finish on engine, exhaust, and trim. The Super Chief Dark Horse is the only model in the Chief family that comes from the factory with saddlebags, windshield, and floorboards.

Stationary Noise and Tyrol: 91 dB(A)

According to EU type approval, the Super Chief Dark Horse has a stationary noise level of 91 dB(A), making it Tyrol-compliant. That is the same figure as the Sport Chief RT and Pursuit Dark Horse. Riders taking the Super Chief Dark Horse over Tyrolean passes face no restrictions under the 95 dB(A) rule.

Price and Positioning

Prices start at €24,590 with a two-year warranty. That is less than the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic at €28,270 with a four-year warranty and Milwaukee-Eight 117, but significantly more than the Chief Dark Horse at €19,390 without the touring package. The Super Chief Dark Horse positions itself as the touring alternative to the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic: considerably less expensive, with a different engine character—Thunderstroke versus Milwaukee-Eight—and a different design heritage.

Verdict

The 2026 Indian Super Chief Dark Horse is the most complete touring-cruiser model in the Indian Chief lineup with the Thunderstroke 116 engine. Every essential touring component comes from the factory: saddlebags, windshield, floorboards, passenger seat, and RIDE COMMAND. 156 Nm, 91 dB(A), 665 mm seat height, wire-spoke wheels. If you want to experience Chief character over longer distances, this is the ready-configured package.
