Direct competitors include the Yamaha XSR900, Triumph Speed Twin 1200, Kawasaki Z900RS, and BMW R 12 nineT. The Suzuki stands out with higher performance and a more sport-oriented chassis.

Compared to the GSX-S1000, the Katana emphasizes styling and touring capability, at the cost of slightly higher weight and a smaller fuel tank.
