Review BMW R 18 Classic (2026)

The Tourer for Riders Who Want to Enjoy the Big Boxer on Long-Distance Trips

BMW developed the R 18 Classic for riders who appreciate the purist R 18 cruiser but also want to get away for the weekend—with a windscreen, passenger seat, and saddlebags standard. Same Big Boxer, same 163 Nm, same DNA, eight kilos more, plus an extra dose of nostalgic touring character. From €23,950.

As of: April 12, 2026 | Tested model: BMW R 18 Classic (2026) | Price from: €23,950

Engine: Identical to the R 18—163 Nm, 91 hp, the Same Big Boxer

1,802 cc, two-cylinder boxer engine, air/oil-cooled, four valves per cylinder, two low-mounted camshafts, pushrods and rocker arms, Euro 5+. 67 kW (91 hp) at 4,750 rpm, 163 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Identical to the base R 18—BMW made no compromises with the Classic’s engine. The 2025 torque update, from 158 to 163 Nm, applies to the entire R 18 family.

There is always at least 150 Nm available between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. That is the characteristic that makes the Classic so effortless on long-distance rides.

No constant shifting in city traffic, no sense of urgency on backroads—this engine simply glides. Three riding modes come standard: Rock, Roll, and Rain. Cruise control is standard on the Classic, unlike on the base R 18.

BMW’s reasoning is correct: riders covering long distances on the Classic will appreciate being able to maintain a constant speed on highways and major roads. Lean-angle-optimized ABS Pro, ASC traction control, and MSR engine drag torque control come standard. Fuel injection uses digital engine management and electronic ride-by-wire throttle.

Chassis: New 19-Inch Spoked Front Wheel for 2025—More Nostalgia, Better Line-Holding Stability

The most significant R 18 Classic update arrived for 2025. The front wheel grew from 16 to 19 inches, now using a 120/70 R19 tire, combined with a new front fender styled after the R 18 B. The fender adopts the B’s deeply extended design and gives the Classic a considerably stronger nostalgic touring character.

The rear wheel remains a 180/65 B16. That allows the Classic to retain traditional touring proportions, while the base R 18 switched to an 18-inch rear wheel. Wire-spoke wheels come standard. Wheelbase is 1,731 mm. The chassis is identical to the R 18’s.

Up front is a non-adjustable 49 mm telescopic fork with 120 mm of travel. At the rear is a steel cantilever swingarm with a concealed monoshock for a hardtail appearance and 90 mm of travel. Final drive is by shaft.

Braking comes from dual 300 mm front discs with fixed four-piston calipers and a 300 mm rear disc with a fixed four-piston caliper. The Classic therefore uses a four-piston rear caliper, while the base R 18 has a two-piston unit. Partially integrated ABS comes standard.

With its heavier 369 kg overall weight, the Classic feels slightly more composed than the base model at low speeds, but naturally requires more attention when maneuvering. Along with the new front wheel, BMW redesigned the side covers and mufflers for 2025. The mufflers retain their round cross-section, fitting the nostalgic touring concept. The front fender works well with the fork sleeves that remain available for the Classic and reinforces the model’s traditional visual line.

Ergonomics: 730 mm Seat Height, Removable Windscreen, Passenger Seat Standard

Seat height is 730 mm—40 mm higher than the base R 18’s 690 mm. That is due to the Classic’s traditional touring geometry and higher rear section. For most riders 1.70 meters and taller, seat height is no problem. Shorter riders can still comfortably get one foot on the ground.

The windscreen comes standard and is removable—one of the most important differences from the base model. It provides useful protection at touring speeds between 100 and 130 km/h. At highway speeds beyond 150 km/h, wind pressure remains noticeable but is acceptable for a motorcycle in this class.

Also standard on the Classic, but not the base R 18, are a passenger seat with grab handles, saddlebags with a leather-look finish and approximately 14 liters of capacity each, and two LED auxiliary lights positioned on either side of the front end. With these inclusions, the Classic comes from the factory ready to tour without requiring accessories.

A USB-C charging port and daytime running lights have been standard since 2025. The round central instrument with analog speedometer and integrated display is part of the standard equipment—easy to read and stylistically appropriate.

Handling: 369 kg Fully Fueled—Heavier Than the Base Model, Heavier Than Its Heritage Rivals

369 kg fully fueled. That is 24 kg more than the base R 18. Compared with the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic at 326 kg and Indian Springfield at 358 kg, the Classic is heavier. At a standstill and during slow maneuvers, that weight produces a very different riding experience from a sportbike. Once moving and at touring speeds, the picture changes. The Classic glides with authority, weight distribution is good, and the chassis absorbs road imperfections without becoming nervous.

Like the entire R 18 family, the Classic is designed for customization. The saddlebags, windscreen, seat, and handlebar can all be changed. The Option 719 program offers high-quality factory options.

BMW has also integrated quick-connect fittings into the various systems, allowing third-party components to be installed without extensive modifications.

Equipment: Touring-Ready From the Factory—That Clearly Separates It From the Base Model

Compared with the base R 18, the Classic additionally comes standard with a removable windscreen, passenger seat with grab handles, saddlebags with approximately 14 liters of capacity each, two LED auxiliary lights, and cruise control.

Standard on both models are ABS Pro, ASC, MSR, three riding modes—Rock, Roll, and Rain—LED headlight, daytime running light, USB-C, wire-spoke wheels, and shaft drive.

Since 2025, the Classic has also featured the 19-inch spoked front wheel, new front fender adopted from the R 18 B, redesigned side covers, and new mufflers. Fork sleeves remain optional. 2025/26 color options include Blackstorm Metallic and Mineral Gray Metallic Matte with a silver drivetrain; Option 719 Aquamarine in Blue Planet Metallic/Oriental Blue Metallic; and the Blacked Out version in Two-Tone Brooklyn Gray Metallic.

Costs: €23,950—and the Direct Comparison With the Heritage Classic and Indian Springfield

The base price is €23,950 plus freight and packaging. For direct comparison, the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic 114 starts at €28,270, while the Indian Springfield starts at €30,290. The BMW R 18 Classic is therefore priced below both American rivals—and additionally offers the world’s largest-displacement production boxer engine, BMW build quality, and a broader customization program.

Service is required every 10,000 km and costs around €450 to €650. Valve-clearance inspection is required every 10,000 km. Shaft drive is low-maintenance, with no chain lubrication or adjustment required. Warranty: two years with unlimited mileage.

Verdict

The BMW R 18 Classic is the logical answer to what happens when you give the world’s largest production boxer engine a touring package. Windscreen, passenger seat, and saddlebags standard, cruise control standard, 163 Nm—this is a complete touring package without forcing you into the accessory catalog.

The 2025 update with its 19-inch spoked front wheel and redesigned front fender makes the Classic more nostalgic and more distinctive than ever. You have to want 369 kg. If you do, there is no better European touring-cruiser package.
