First Impression: A DesertX That Already Knows Where It Wants to Go
If the first thing you notice on an enduro is the luggage, you have found its focus.
The DesertX Discovery comes with the aluminum luggage set already installed—35 liters on the right, 41 liters on the left, 76 liters total—and it does not look like a workshop project with luggage bolted on afterward. That is no accident, it is meant to be a statement of the bike’s intent.
Ducati deliberately designed the Discovery as a package in which all components work together: luggage racks, crash bars, skid plate, and radiator guard all follow the same design philosophy. Nothing rattles. Nothing looks aftermarket.
The centerstand—standard on the Discovery but not on the standard DesertX—makes a genuine difference in everyday use: chain cleaning, tire changes, simply parking the motorcycle on uneven ground. Anyone who has ever tried to park a fully loaded enduro on loose gravel using only the side stand knows why that matters.
What Separates the Discovery From the Standard DesertX
Engine, suspension, electronics, wheels, brakes: identical to the standard DesertX. The 890 cc V-twin with IVT, the KYB suspension with 230/220 mm of travel, the Brembo M4.32 brake calipers, the six riding modes—it is all the same.
What the Discovery adds is a carefully assembled protection and luggage infrastructure: 35 + 41-liter aluminum side cases with mounting system, centerstand, heated grips, tubular-steel crash bars, skid plate, aluminum radiator guard, handguards, and slightly taller wind protection.
Bought individually, these components cost more than the price premium of the Discovery over the standard DesertX. That was true of the previous-generation Discovery, and it will probably be true again for the 2026 version.
Aluminum Cases: 76 Liters—and Why the Dimensions Make Sense
35 liters on the right, 41 liters on the left. The layout is asymmetrical because the exhaust takes up more space on the right, and that is a typical situation for the class. A total capacity of 76 liters is enough for two people and ten days of luggage if you pack carefully. The left case is large enough to hold a full-face helmet.
The rack system attaches directly to the rear subframe and distributes the load symmetrically across the motorcycle. On adventure bikes with asymmetrical luggage mounting, that is a non-trivial detail that can be felt in the handling.
Crash Bars, Skid Plate, Radiator Guard: Why They Belong Together
On a motorcycle that is meant to be dropped, protective components belong in the standard equipment. On the standard DesertX, Ducati provides crash pads for the fuel tank. The Discovery adds tubular-steel crash bars protecting the engine and bodywork, an aluminum skid plate, and a radiator guard. The radiator guard is the detail most frequently underestimated off-road. Stones on gravel roads fly in directions nobody expects. One rock hitting an unprotected oil cooler can cost more than the entire protection package.
Heated Grips and Taller Wind Protection: Concessions to Reality
An enduro used on Alpine passes or in Scandinavia needs heated grips. Riding in cold weather costs concentration. The Discovery has them as standard. The slightly taller wind protection is the other pragmatic detail. On the road between two adventure sections—and there is always road between them—a few extra millimeters of wind protection make a difference on longer stages.
These are not about performance specs, but are practical design considerations for riders who actually use their motorcycles.
Engine and Electronics: Identical to the Standard Model
890 cc V-twin, 110 hp, IVT, no Desmo, 45,000 km valve-clearance interval. Six riding modes including Enduro and Rally. Four-level Cornering ABS. KYB suspension with a generous 230/220 mm of travel. Brembo M4.32. Horizontal 5-inch TFT. Everything is the same as on the standard DesertX. For the complete report, see: Standard DesertX (2026).
Discovery vs. Standard + Accessories: The Price Math
The previous-generation Discovery from 2024, with the old Testastretta engine, cost €19,390. The standard DesertX at the time cost €16,790. The €2,600 premium for the Discovery Package was lower than the combined retail price of the same accessories purchased individually. The price of the 2026 Discovery has not yet been published. The logic remains the same. If you would buy even half of the Discovery Package separately—cases, racks, centerstand, heated grips—you should order the Discovery configuration from the start.
Verdict: The DesertX for Riders Who Want to Leave Immediately
The 2026 DesertX Discovery is the right motorcycle for riders who do not want to spend time configuring and retrofitting their bike before they can start riding. Same engine, same suspension as the standard DesertX—but with everything that makes sense for long-distance travel both on and off the road already installed. Four-year warranty. 45,000 km valve-clearance interval. Ask your dealer for the price.
Quick Check
+ Aluminum side cases standard: 35 liters right + 41 liters left = 76 liters total; factory rack system; asymmetrical because of exhaust; left case accommodates a full-face helmet; symmetrical load distribution through the rack system. Centerstand standard—the standard DesertX does not have one; essential for chain cleaning and tire changes on uneven ground.
+ Tubular-steel crash bars; aluminum skid plate; aluminum radiator guard; handguards: complete protection package for genuine off-road use. Heated grips included—the standard DesertX does without them. Slightly taller wind protection for greater comfort over multiple stages. Discovery Package costs less than buying the accessories individually; previous version offered an advantage of approximately €1,280 compared with purchasing the parts separately.
+ 890 cc V-twin, IVT, no Desmo, 110 hp, 45,000 km valve-clearance interval, new for 2026; 46 mm KYB USD fork with 230 mm of travel and independently adjustable fork legs; KYB rear shock with 220 mm of travel, remote adjuster, and Full Floater linkage; Brembo M4.32 + 305 mm discs; four-level Cornering ABS; six riding modes including Enduro + Rally; horizontal 5-inch TFT; factory crash pads; four-year warranty.
+ Tubeless 21/18-inch wire-spoke wheels, Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR, 93 dB(A) Tyrol-compliant for predecessor—confirm 2026 figure with dealer; A2 restriction to 35 kW available; optional 8-liter auxiliary rear tank providing 26 liters total capacity; Mosko Moto soft bags available as an additional accessory option through the cooperation program.
– 2026 price not yet published: previous-generation 2024 Discovery cost €19,390; 2026 standard DesertX base price is €16,390. 2026 stationary noise not yet officially confirmed: 93 dB(A) likely based on predecessor; confirm with dealer. Tyrol limit is 95 dB(A).
– Engine and suspension are identical to the standard DesertX: the Discovery Package brings no technical performance upgrade. 18-liter main fuel tank, 3 liters less than predecessor; optional 8-liter auxiliary tank recommended for maximum range. Fully loaded with cases and passenger, the motorcycle is heavier than the basic figure suggests. No DMS/navigation standard; preparation included, DMS available as an accessory.
– Wind protection is taller than on the standard model but remains limited for pure highway touring. No heated seat standard—heated grips yes, heated seat no. DesertX Rally, covered in a separate review, is the alternative for riders prioritizing extreme off-road use: 250/240 mm of suspension travel, KYB Closed Cartridge, Excel wheels.
