Review Harley-Davidson Nightster Special (RH975S; 2026):

Liquid-Cooled V-Twin, 225 kg, Blacked Out—the Modern Sportster for the Road

The Nightster Special is the motorcycle that proves Harley-Davidson can build a modern liquid-cooled engine that sounds like an air-cooled classic. Revolution Max technology, Sportster DNA, 225 kg ready to ride—and a center of gravity lower than on almost any other production model of this size.

What’s New for 2026

For 2026, the Revolution Max Sport lineup—Nightster, Nightster Special, and Sportster S—gets updated riding modes, new display options and features, plus fresh color choices. The Nightster Special’s engine and chassis remain technically unchanged.

New additions include Blood Orange as a special color with XR750 racing graphics on the fuel-tank area—an explicit reference to Harley-Davidson’s flat-track racing machine of the 1970s—along with additional color options. The 4-inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity is now available with an optimized menu structure.

Model Designation and Positioning

The Harley-Davidson Nightster Special carries the model designation RH975S. It is the upgraded version of the simpler Nightster, RH975, with more equipment, SHOWA suspension instead of the simpler base fork, and a West Coast mini fairing surrounding the headlight.

The Nightster Special belongs to Harley-Davidson’s Sport family, which has been based on the Revolution Max engine since 2021 and is technically very different from the Softail cruiser models with their air-cooled Milwaukee-Eight engines. Here, you get a modern, liquid-cooled V-twin that revs higher and responds differently to throttle input.

The Clever Fuel-Tank Concept: Low Center of Gravity Through Reversed Logic

The Nightster Special breaks with one of the most fundamental motorcycle conventions: the fuel tank is located beneath the seat rather than above the engine.

What looks like the fuel tank—the classic teardrop shape above the engine—is actually a frame cover incorporating the peanut-shaped air-cleaner cover from Sportster tradition. The real fuel tank sits low in the chassis, dramatically lowering the center of gravity.

The tank holds only 11.7 liters. That is the limitation of this elegant concept: range is approximately 210 km. If you are planning longer tours, plan your fuel stops as well.

The benefits of the low center of gravity are clearly noticeable in the handling. At 225 kg ready to ride, the Nightster Special feels lighter than it is, remains stable, and carries its mass low.

The TFT display provides the information a motorcycle in this category needs: riding mode, rpm, gear position, range, and navigation via Bluetooth pairing.

Engine: Revolution Max 975T—Liquid-Cooled, High-Revving

975 cc, V-twin, liquid-cooled, 90 hp at 7,500 rpm and 95 Nm at 5,750 rpm. The “T” in the engine name stands for Torque—and that is not an empty marketing label. The torque curve remains relatively flat across a broad rev range, which makes the engine easy to live with in everyday riding.

The Revolution Max 975T is technically a modern engine: liquid-cooled, high-revving, with precise throttle response.

That sounds like the opposite of a traditional Harley engine—and in operation, it sounds like the opposite of a modern engine. The 2-into-1 exhaust is tuned for an aggressive soundtrack. The result is a motorcycle that sounds like a Sportster even though the engine operates very differently internally from a Milwaukee-Eight.

There is a six-speed transmission, chain final drive, and slipper clutch. Fuel consumption is 5.5 L/100 km. The high-performance downdraft intake above the engine, designed for substantial airflow, fits the concept perfectly. Because the fuel tank is positioned below, the space above the engine can be used for an intake layout that would not be possible with a conventional tank-over-engine design.

Suspension: SHOWA and Twin Rear Shocks

Up front is a 41 mm SHOWA Dual Bending Valve fork with aluminum triple clamps and 114 mm of travel. At the rear are two directly mounted external emulsion shocks with threaded collars for spring-preload adjustment and 76 mm of travel.

Harley-Davidson’s description of a “comprehensive SHOWA suspension” refers to the quality of the SHOWA fork and the overall calibration of the system. The rear shocks themselves are conventional—two visible external units in the traditional style, giving the modern concept a familiar visual connection to Sportster heritage.

Braking comes from a four-piston axial front caliper on a 320 mm disc and a single-piston floating rear caliper on a 260 mm disc, with ABS standard. The brakes suit the engine performance and weight. On the road, the setup is sufficient and easy to modulate.

Wheel sizes are 19 inches at the front and 16 inches at the rear, using seven-spoke cast-alloy wheels.

Design: Sportster Heritage With Modern Technology

The Nightster Special speaks two languages at the same time. On the outside: classic 1970s Sportster silhouette, peanut-shaped air-cleaner cover, flat tank-to-fender line, West Coast mini fairing around the headlight, and an all-black finish.

Underneath: a modern liquid-cooled engine, 4-inch TFT with Bluetooth, five riding modes, cruise control, and traction control.

It is a consistent dual strategy. Older riders recognize the motorcycle through its styling; younger riders recognize it through its technology.

A passenger seat and passenger footpegs come standard and can be removed for solo use. That is a detail no longer standard on the sportier Sportster S—the Nightster Special remains practical for everyday two-up riding.

Price and Positioning

From €11,200 MSRP plus €650 MY26 transportation/setup, with a four-year warranty included. That places it clearly below the Street Bob at €17,500 and the Low Rider S at €23,190—but it is an entirely different motorcycle concept.

The Triumph Trident 800 costs around €10,000 and uses a three-cylinder engine. The Kawasaki Z900 costs a little over €10,000.

The Nightster Special competes less directly with those motorcycles than with the Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 at around €7,900 or the Triumph Speed Twin 900 at around €10,200—not in design, but within the interests of similar buyers.

If you want a Harley-Davidson with a liquid-cooled engine for less than €12,000, this is your choice.

Verdict

The Nightster Special is the most misunderstood motorcycle in Harley-Davidson’s lineup—because from the outside it looks like a classic Sportster, while underneath it rides like a modern sport naked.

If you see that as a contradiction, you have missed the logic. If you see it as an opportunity, you have found your motorcycle.

Quick Check

+ Revolution Max 975T: liquid-cooled, 90 hp, 95 Nm—modern, high-revving engine with a broad torque curve; sounds more aggressive than its technology suggests; SHOWA fork, five riding modes, 4-inch TFT with Bluetooth, cruise control, TC, ABS

+ Fuel tank under the seat: one of the lowest centers of gravity in this weight class; 225 kg feels lighter than it is; 715 mm seat height; passenger seat standard; blacked-out finish, West Coast fairing, 1970s tank graphics

+ From €11,200: least expensive entry into a liquid-cooled Harley engine; Blood Orange Special Edition with XR750 graphics; four-year warranty; extensive dealer network

+ Everyday practicality: removable passenger seat standard, high handlebar with 127 mm riser for an upright riding position, comfortable for city and backroad riding

11.7-liter fuel tank under the seat: approx. 210 km range—the shortest range among Harley-Davidson models in this family; inconvenient for touring riders, no problem for urban riders

76 mm rear suspension travel: limiting on poor roads and clearly noticeable over rough surfaces; suspension sits between comfort and sport without specializing in either direction

Stationary noise not published; confirm with dealer; no native TFT navigation standard, only via Bluetooth smartphone pairing; technically unchanged from 2025 for 2026 apart from new colors and display updates

Approx. €11,200 for 90 hp and 975 cc is somewhat expensive compared with Japanese and European competitors; a premium for the Harley-Davidson badge and access to the brand
