Review Harley-Davidson Sportster S (RH1250S; 2026)
122 hp, Brembo, Fully Adjustable Fork, 94 dB(A)—The Sportiest Harley-Davidson on the Market
The Sportster S is the motorcycle that proves Harley-Davidson knows how to build a sport naked—and still make it look like a Harley. 122 hp from a liquid-cooled V-twin, fully adjustable USD fork, Brembo brake, flat-track exhaust, Forty-Eight DNA. And 94 dB(A): Tyrol-compliant.
As of: April 29, 2026 | Model: Harley-Davidson Sportster S (RH1250S; model designation: RH 1250 S; 2026; new for 2026: updated riding modes, new finishes, highlighted cooling fins) | Manufacturer: Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Milwaukee, WI, USA | Price in Germany: from approx. €17,570 MSRP including VAT, plus €560 transportation/setup; 4-year warranty included | Stationary noise: 94 dB(A)—Tyrol-compliant, below 95 dB(A) | Warranty: 4 years, 2-year manufacturer warranty + 2-year extended warranty
What’s New for 2026
As part of the Revolution Max platform update, the 2026 Sportster S gets newly highlighted cooling fins and blacked-out finishes that give the engine a sharper visual appearance. New riding-mode configurations and optimized display features complete the update.
Engine, suspension, and brakes are technically identical to the 2025 model. Stationary noise remains unchanged at 94 dB(A)—and therefore Tyrol-compliant.
Positioning: Not a Cruiser, Not a Naked Bike, Somewhere in Between
The Sportster S is the most difficult motorcycle in Harley-Davidson’s lineup to explain because it refuses to fit neatly into any category.
It is not a cruiser—the 765 mm seat height and sporting riding position rule that out. It is not a conventional naked bike either—the styling is far too Harley-Davidson for that. A sport naked with Harley DNA is the most accurate description.
122 hp, Brembo radial caliper, fully adjustable USD fork, high-mounted exhaust, 160 mm front tire on a 17-inch wheel. That is sport-naked hardware. The styling comes from the legendary Sportster Forty-Eight.
Anyone who buys a Sportster S deliberately chooses this middle ground. It is not the sportiest motorcycle in this performance class—that would be something like the Ducati Streetfighter or BMW S 1000 R. But it is the sportiest motorcycle with Harley-Davidson written on the tank.
For a specific target audience, that is exactly right.
Engine: Revolution Max 1250T—the Most Powerful Sportster Engine Ever
1,252 cc, liquid-cooled V-twin, 122 hp and 125 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The engine is a stressed chassis member—it is not simply mounted inside the frame, it performs structural frame functions itself. That saves weight while simultaneously increasing chassis rigidity.
At 228 kg ready to ride, that is a good result for a 1,252 cc V-twin carrying Harley-Davidson heritage.
The “T” in the engine name stands for Torque. The torque curve is broad and available early, with the engine pulling convincingly from low rpm before really coming alive at higher engine speeds. That makes it flexible and enjoyable on the road.
The high-mounted 2-into-1-into-2 exhaust in flat-track style is the motorcycle’s most distinctive visual and acoustic feature: tucked in tightly, cornering-friendly, and loud in its own particular way. There is a six-speed transmission, chain final drive, and slipper clutch. Fuel consumption is 5.1 L/100 km.
The Under-Seat Fuel Tank and Range
As on the Nightster Special, the Sportster S carries its fuel tank beneath the seat. Capacity is 11.8 liters, giving a range of approximately 178 km.
That is the shortest range of any current Harley-Davidson model and the most important limitation for riders planning longer trips. In city traffic and on short to medium-distance rides, it is not a problem. If you want to take the Sportster S on multi-day tours, fuel stops become a fixed part of route planning.
Suspension: Fully Adjustable, Brembo, Sporty
Up front is a 43 mm USD fork, fully adjustable for spring preload, rebound, and compression damping, with aluminum triple clamps.
This is the best and most adjustable suspension in the Revolution Max Sport family. The Nightster Special has a conventional SHOWA fork; the Sportster S gets a fully adjustable USD setup. At the rear are twin shocks with 89 mm of travel.
The calibration is designed for sport-oriented handling, which makes it noticeably firm on poor roads—a comfort compromise familiar to and accepted by any sport-naked rider.
Up front, braking comes from a Brembo radial caliper gripping a 320 mm disc, backed by C-ABS. This is the same type of braking concept used by sportbikes such as the Ducati Monster—in a Harley-Davidson. Braking power is precise, easy to modulate, and convincing.
At the rear is a single floating caliper for a 260 mm disc on 16 inch wheel with a 180/70 tire. The front wheel measures 17 inches and carries a 160/70 tire. That unusually wide front tire is a styling feature, but it also genuinely puts more rubber on the road.
Stationary Noise: 94 dB(A)—Tyrol-Compliant
The Sportster S has an EU type-approved stationary noise figure of 94 dB(A). That puts it below Tyrol’s 95 dB(A) limit, meaning it is fully legal on roads affected by Tyrol’s motorcycle noise restrictions.
If you want to ride a Harley-Davidson through Tyrol without compromises, choose the Sportster S.
Design: Forty-Eight Heritage
Visually, the Sportster S carries the genes of the Sportster Forty-Eight: short, compact tail section; wide front tire on a small wheel; low, muscular silhouette.
The vintage tank emblem—the actual fuel tank is under the seat, while a frame cover above carries the emblem—is a direct tribute to Sportster history.
The newly highlighted cooling fins and blacked-out finishes for 2026 give the engine a sharper, more industrial appearance. There are five riding modes—Sport, Road, Rain + two Custom—a round 102 mm TFT, Keyless ignition, cruise control, and USB-C.
Price and Positioning
From approximately €17,570 MSRP plus €560 transportation/setup, with a four-year warranty included.
That is the price of a sport-naked motorcycle with Brembo brakes, a fully adjustable USD fork, 122 hp, and a Harley-Davidson badge.
Direct comparisons include the Ducati Monster from around €13,000 with 111 hp, lighter weight, sportier handling, and a different character. The Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS starts at around €20,000 with 180 hp and a three-cylinder engine. The flat-track-inspired Indian FTR is now available only used.
The Sportster S is more expensive than comparable sport nakeds without the Harley-Davidson badge—but less expensive than every other Harley-Davidson model offering a similar level of technology.
Verdict
The 2026 Sportster S is the best motorcycle Harley-Davidson currently offers in the sporting segment. Brembo, fully adjustable USD fork, 122 hp, 94 dB(A), flat-track exhaust.
If you want a Harley with genuine sporting ambitions, this is their best offering, but if outright sporting performance is your priority and you consider the Harley-Davidson badge merely a bonus, Ducati or Triumph offers more performance. Where you land on this spectrum determines if this is the bike for you or not.
Quick Check
+ 122 hp and 125 Nm from a liquid-cooled 1,252 cc V-twin; Brembo radial front caliper; fully adjustable 43 mm USD fork with preload, rebound, and compression adjustment; high-mounted flat-track exhaust; five riding modes; C-ABS; C-TCS
+ 94 dB(A) stationary noise: Tyrol-compliant—the only Harley-Davidson model in the tested cruiser family without Tyrol restrictions; 228 kg ready to ride is reasonable for 1,252 cc
+ Forty-Eight styling, flat-track exhaust, wide 160 mm front tire on a 17-inch wheel: strongest visual identity of all Revolution Max Sport models; round TFT; Keyless; cruise control; USB-C; four-year warranty
+ From approx. €17,570: least expensive combination of Brembo, fully adjustable USD suspension, and more than 120 hp in the Harley-Davidson lineup; Tyrol compliance makes it more touring-friendly than the Street Bob or Low Rider S
– 11.8-liter fuel tank under the seat: approx. 178 km range—the shortest range of any Harley-Davidson model; no problem for urban riders, but a planning factor for touring riders
– Firm suspension calibration: noticeable on poor roads; 765 mm seat height can be demanding for shorter riders; riding position becomes tiring on long stages; no passenger seat standard
– Technically identical to 2025 for 2026: only new visual details and riding-mode updates; if you own a 2025 model, you already have the same motorcycle
