What’s New for 2026

The most important 2026 update to the Chieftain PowerPlus is a new fork-mounted fairing with a newly developed aerodynamic profile and a new LED lighting signature around the headlight. This is not merely a cosmetic update. The fork-mounted fairing moves directly with steering input, unlike the Challenger’s frame-mounted fairing. According to Indian, the new profile is designed to improve high-speed stability and wind protection.

Also new is a redesigned rider cockpit with improved access to all controls without requiring the rider to look away from the road. New colors include Black Crystal with Championship Gold, Chalk/Black Metallic, and Black Smoke, along with new tank graphics. The PowerPlus 112 engine is technically identical to the 2025 version.

Chieftain PowerPlus vs. Challenger Dark Horse: Same Power, Different Package

Anyone familiar with the Challenger Dark Horse 112 already knows the Chieftain PowerPlus Dark Horse engine: PowerPlus 112, 1,834 cc, liquid-cooled, 122 hp in German specification, 181 Nm at 3,600 rpm, with cylinder deactivation. The difference lies in the vehicle concept. The Challenger uses a frame-mounted fairing, creating a slim, sporty bagger profile but less wind protection. The Chieftain PowerPlus uses a fork-mounted fairing with an electrically adjustable windshield offering 100 mm of travel, resulting in greater touring comfort, more frontal area, and a broader touring silhouette.

If your priorities are sporting character and an aggressive visual presence, buy the Challenger. If you plan longer trips with genuine wind protection but do not want to give up the PowerPlus engine, buy the Chieftain. There is no engine decision between the two—the powerplant is identical.

1,834 cc, liquid-cooled, SOHC, four valves per cylinder, 122 hp in German homologation and 126 hp in U.S. specification, 181 Nm at approximately 3,600 rpm, twin 52 mm throttle bodies, 11.4:1 compression, and rear-cylinder deactivation under low load. The PowerPlus delivers consistent power across the rev range up to 5,500 rpm. That is the key character difference from the regular Chieftain’s Thunderstroke 116, which delivers its torque as early as 2,900 rpm and then tapers off. The difference is noticeable during highway passing: the PowerPlus has immediate reserves in every gear, while the Thunderstroke requires more frequent downshifts in corners and on inclines.

Chassis: USD Fork, SmartLean, Brembo

A 43 mm USD fork provides 130 mm of travel and works with SmartLean technology, including lean-angle-sensitive ABS and traction control. At the rear is a monoshock with electronically adjustable spring preload controlled from the handlebar and 114 mm of travel. Electronic preload adjustment allows the rider to adapt the motorcycle for solo, two-up, or loaded riding without tools.

Radially mounted Brembo front calipers work with dual 320 mm semi-floating discs, while the rear uses a 298 mm disc. SmartLean ABS and linked braking come standard. This is the same high-grade chassis and braking package used on the Challenger Dark Horse 112, installed here in a 382 kg touring bagger.

Ergonomics: Touring Position for Long Distances

Seat height is 672 mm and wheelbase is 1,668 mm. A two-up Gunfighter seat comes standard. The Chieftain PowerPlus riding position is designed for long-distance comfort: the rider sits upright behind a wide handlebar, hands around shoulder height, with the feet on comfortably forward-positioned controls. The passenger seat is generously sized, and real-world passenger reports place the Chieftain among the more comfortable touring motorcycles in this class for a pillion.

The new 2026 rider cockpit improves access to all controls—windshield adjustment, audio system, navigation, and riding modes—without requiring the rider to take their eyes off the road. Heated grips and a heated seat come standard.

Equipment: Everything From the Factory

Remote-locking hard saddlebags with more than 68 liters of total storage come standard, along with an electrically adjustable windshield with 100 mm of travel, adjustable fairing vents, heated grips, heated seat, a 100-watt audio system with four 50-watt fairing speakers, AM/FM, Bluetooth, USB, and smartphone input, plus a 7-inch RIDE COMMAND touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, configurable data displays, TPMS, keyless ignition, and USB.

The PowerPlus 112 package includes the complete rider-assist suite as standard: SmartLean with lean-angle-sensitive ABS and traction control, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Tailgate Warning, Bike Hold Control for automatic hill-hold braking, and electronically linked braking. On a 382 kg motorcycle ridden on highways and through corners, this package is not a luxury but a genuine contribution to riding safety.

Pricing starts at €34,390 with a two-year manufacturer warranty. The direct comparison is the Indian Challenger Dark Horse 112 at €33,390, with the identical engine, a slimmer bagger profile, and less touring comfort. The Harley-Davidson Street Glide starts at €32,600 with a 109 hp Milwaukee-Eight VVT 117, an air-cooled engine with a different character, and a four-year warranty. The BMW K 1600 GTL starts at €29,270 with 160 hp and a six-cylinder engine, but follows a different concept.

The Chieftain PowerPlus Dark Horse is the most comprehensively equipped touring-oriented offering in the PowerPlus segment. If you want the engine and the full touring package in one motorcycle, this is where you pay for everything at once.

Verdict

The 2026 Indian Chieftain PowerPlus Dark Horse is the touring bagger for riders who refuse to give up the PowerPlus 112 engine but still want to cover long distances with genuine wind protection and complete touring equipment. If you love the Challenger Dark Horse 112 but come home after 300 km tired of the wind, buy the Chieftain. 181 Nm, 7-inch Apple CarPlay display, 68 liters of luggage capacity, electrically adjustable windshield, heated grips, heated seat—all from the factory, with no accessory-budget calculations.
