Review KTM 690 SMC R (2026)

The World’s Most Powerful Single-Cylinder Supermoto—79 hp, Brembo M4.32, 162 kg

Seventy-nine horsepower, 73 Nm, and an LC4 that is roughly half new. A Brembo M4.32 Monobloc caliper works on a 320 mm front disc. The 48 mm WP APEX fork uses a split-function design with 30-click adjustment. Continental Attack SM II tires are standard, mounted on tubeless 17-inch aluminum wire-spoke wheels. Supermoto ABS frees the rear and reduces front intervention for controlled slides. Optional Track Mode adds Launch Control. Curb weight is 162 kg, seat height 899 mm. Oil changes are due every 15,000 km. Warranty coverage is up to four years. Price: EUR 12,499 plus ancillary charges.

Engine: 79 hp From 692.7 cc—More Than Ducati, More Refined Than Before, 15,000 km Oil Changes

The LC4c single-cylinder engine has been fundamentally revised for model year 2026, with roughly half of its components new. There is a new crankcase, a revised oil circuit, new valve timing, new clutch and alternator covers, and a compact muffler with a new catalytic converter. The result is 79 hp and 73 Nm from 692.7 cc. That puts it 1.5 hp ahead of the Ducati Hypermotard Mono and makes it the most powerful production single-cylinder engine on the market. Twin ignition and Ride-by-Wire provide controlled, direct throttle response, while a Keihin EMS manages the engine electronically.

The LC4 has always been defined by character: a single that makes no attempt to disguise what it is. It roars, pulses, and spins upward exactly as you expect from a big 690-class single. For MY2026, however, it is more refined than ever. Two balance shafts reduce primary vibration without stripping away the engine’s personality. The optional Quickshifter+ enables clutchless upshifts and downshifts through KTM PowerParts. Oil-change intervals stretch to 15,000 km, with valve-clearance inspection not due until 30,000 km. Those are figures you do not expect from a high-performance supermoto.

Suspension and Brakes: Split-Function WP APEX, Brembo M4.32 Monobloc, Continental Attack SM II Standard

The 48 mm WP APEX USD fork uses a split-function layout: the left fork leg handles compression damping only, while the right handles rebound only. Each function can be adjusted independently through 30 clicks at the top of the fork legs, without one setting influencing the other. Front travel is 224 mm. At the rear, a WP APEX shock with Pro-Lever linkage and progressive action provides 240 mm of travel and is fully adjustable, including high- and low-speed compression damping. Continental Attack SM II tires are fitted as standard to tubeless 17-inch aluminum wire-spoke wheels—a level of original-equipment tire that is unusual in this class.

The front brake leaves little to criticize. A radially mounted Brembo M4.32 Monobloc caliper works on a 320 mm disc. The M4.32 uses a one-piece Monobloc construction rather than two caliper halves bolted together, hardware more commonly associated with superbikes and more expensive sport motorcycles. A 240 mm disc is fitted at the rear. Supermoto ABS is the key feature for sporting use: it disables rear ABS completely and reduces intervention at the front, allowing hard, late braking and controlled rear-wheel slides. If you want slides, the system lets you have them.

Electronics: Street, Sport, Optional Track Mode—Launch Control and Anti-Wheelie for the Road

Street and Sport modes are standard. They differ in traction-control intervention and in the way the motorcycle responds under acceleration and braking, while both use the 6D sensor to support cornering ABS and lean-sensitive traction control. Optional Track Mode is where the SMC R separates itself from the 690 Enduro R and its Rally mode. Track Mode unlocks Launch Control, five-stage Anti-Wheelie, and manual slip control. It is aimed at riders exploring the limits on closed circuits or in controlled environments—or those who simply want to know the capability is there.

The new 4.2-inch TFT with KTM Connect supports navigation, music control, and phone functions, while USB-C is standard. Redesigned illuminated switchgear is new for 2026, and lighting is full LED. The 13.3-liter fuel tank is a self-supporting plastic structure that performs a structural function and contributes to weight balancing.

Ergonomics: 899 mm Seat Height, 162 kg, 237 mm Ground Clearance—Supermoto as It Should Be

A seat height of 899 mm is part of the SMC R formula. It always has been and likely always will be. Riders over roughly 1.75 meters should find secure footing at traffic lights thanks to the 162 kg curb weight and slim construction. Shorter riders can have the motorcycle lowered by around four centimeters through a KTM workshop. Weight is 162 kg fully fueled and 153.5 kg dry, roughly 2.5 kg more than the Ducati Hypermotard Mono without fuel. In practice, the difference is negligible. Ground clearance is 237 mm. Wheelbase is 1,476 mm, significantly shorter than the 690 Enduro R’s 1,506 mm, and the difference is noticeable in tight-course agility.

The ergonomics are designed around seated riding with full freedom of movement for aggressive cornering. The footpegs sit high, the handlebar is narrow and sporting. The SMC R is not designed as a passenger motorcycle and is the wrong tool for long-distance touring. Its world is the city, mountain passes, short blasts, and the racetrack—not travel. Stationary noise was listed at 94 dB(A) in the previous year’s registration documents, below Tyrol’s 95 dB limit.

Handling: 79 hp, 162 kg, Brembo M4.32—No Other Single Does What This One Does

The KTM 690 SMC R has no true rival in its class, and that is a market fact rather than a boast. The Husqvarna 701 Supermoto uses the same engine with different bodywork, is slightly less expensive, and offers less track-focused electronics. The Ducati Hypermotard Mono makes 1.5 hp less and follows a different concept. The Aprilia Tuono 457 belongs to another class entirely. If you want a street-legal single-cylinder supermoto with 79 hp, a standard Brembo M4.32, and optional Track Mode with Launch Control, you buy the KTM 690 SMC R—or you buy nothing directly comparable.

The riding experience has remained recognizable for generations, and that is a compliment. “Carving skis on two wheels” was how one test described the previous generation, and the phrase still fits: effortless turn-in, braking at the very last moment, controlled slides, then hard acceleration out. The LC4 provides its own soundtrack throughout. It is pure, unfiltered riding fun, and MY2026 makes it more refined and better supported electronically than ever before.

Cost: EUR 12,499 Plus Ancillary Charges—Brembo, WP, Track Mode, 4-Year Warranty, 15,000 km Service

EUR 12,499 is the same list price as the 690 Enduro R. Standard equipment includes the Brembo M4.32 Monobloc, Continental Attack SM II tires, split-function WP APEX fork, a fully adjustable rear shock with high- and low-speed compression damping, and a 6D sensor. Track Mode is optional. Oil changes are due every 15,000 km. KTM offers up to four years of Premium Manufacturer Warranty from MY2025 across its Street lineup, provided scheduled servicing is performed by an authorized KTM dealer. Quickshifter+ can be retrofitted through KTM PowerParts.

For comparison, the Ducati Hypermotard Mono starts at around EUR 13,490 in Germany, produces 77.5 hp, and comes without Track Mode with Launch Control and without a Brembo Monobloc caliper as standard. The KTM is less expensive with similar or stronger equipment. The Husqvarna 701 Supermoto sits roughly EUR 500 to EUR 1,000 below the KTM, but with less electronics and a different visual identity.

Verdict

The KTM 690 SMC R is what it has always been—now only better. Seventy-nine horsepower, a half-new LC4, Brembo M4.32, split-function WP APEX suspension, Continental Attack SM II tires, optional Track Mode, 15,000 km service intervals, up to four years of warranty, 162 kg, and a EUR 12,499 list price. Nothing else in the supermoto segment matches this package. If you want a fully equipped single-cylinder supermoto, there is no real alternative.
