Review KTM 890 Adventure R (2026)

The Most Serious Middleweight Adventure Bike - 105 hp, 240 mm of Travel, Limited Rally Edition

The 890 Adventure R sits at the top of KTM’s middleweight adventure lineup. It combines an 889 cc parallel twin producing 105 hp and 100 Nm with a 48 mm WP XPLOR USD fork and PDS rear shock, both fully adjustable, 240 mm of suspension travel, Mitas Enduro Trail tires, 21/18-inch wire-spoke wheels, automatic Offroad ABS, Demo Mode, up to four years of warranty, and a 15,000 km service interval. Price: EUR 16,985.

As of: April 10, 2026 | Tested model: KTM 890 Adventure R (2026) | Price: EUR 16,985

Engine: 105 hp, 100 Nm, DOHC Twin - More Than the 790 Adventure and More Character Than an Inline-Four

The 889 cc LC8c parallel twin produces 105 hp at 8,000 rpm and 100 Nm at 6,500 rpm. That is ten horsepower more than the 790 Adventure and, more importantly for off-road riding, a useful range of torque: enough low-end drive for slow technical sections and enough top-end performance for highway stages. Bore measures 90.7 mm, stroke 68.8 mm, and compression is 13.5:1. The engine uses DOHC cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder, Ride-by-Wire, a six-speed transmission, slipper clutch, chain final drive, and Euro 5 compliance.

Demo Mode works just as it does on the 790 Adventure. For the first 1,500 km, Rally mode, Quickshifter+, and other software packages are unlocked free of charge. After 1,500 km, the rider decides which features to activate permanently for a fee. It is a fair approach. Anyone buying an 890 Adventure R should at least try Rally mode. On the standard model, the Tech Pack with Rally mode, Quickshifter+, cruise control, and Motor Slip Regulation costs extra; on the Rally Edition, it is standard. Service intervals are 15,000 km.

Suspension: 48 mm WP XPLOR, PDS Rear Shock, 240 mm at Both Ends - The Best Standard Adventure Suspension in the Segment

Suspension is the central difference between the 890 Adventure R and the 790 Adventure. The 48 mm WP XPLOR USD fork offers 240 mm of travel - 40 mm more than the 790 - and is fully adjustable. At the rear is a WP XPLOR PDS shock. PDS stands for Progressive Damping System, a linkage-free layout in which the shock connects directly to the swingarm. It provides a precise, linear damping character while reducing component count and unsprung mass. Rear travel is also 240 mm, and both ends are fully adjustable.

The frame is made from chrome-molybdenum steel tubing, with the engine acting as a stressed member. A 63.7-degree steering-head angle and 110.4 mm of trail reflect a geometry aimed at off-road stability. Offroad ABS activates automatically when Offroad or Rally mode is selected: front-wheel ABS intervention is reduced and rear ABS is disabled completely, allowing controlled rear-wheel slides. Braking comes from twin 320 mm front discs with radial calipers and a single rear disc. Mitas Enduro Trail tires are standard on 21/18-inch wire-spoke wheels.

Ergonomics and Electronics: 880 mm Seat, 5-Inch TFT, 6D Sensor, 20-Liter Tank - Built for Long Days in the Saddle

Seat height is 880 mm - lower than the limited Rally Edition’s 910 mm, but still firmly in enduro territory. Fully fueled weight is 214 kg. The 20-liter tank can deliver up to 500 km of range with economical riding, considerably more than the nominal factory figure. The 5-inch TFT with KTM Connect supports turn-by-turn navigation, music control, and phone functions. A 6D sensor manages cornering ABS, MTC, and Wheelie Control. The windshield is deliberately kept low for off-road riders, improving visibility and freedom of movement.

Street, Rain, and Offroad riding modes are standard, with Rally mode available optionally through Demo Mode or the Tech Pack. Stationary noise is 94 dB(A), just below Tyrol’s 95 dB limit. Cornering ABS, Offroad ABS, MTC traction control, and a USB charging port are standard. KTM’s Premium Manufacturer Warranty runs for up to four years from MY2025, provided scheduled servicing is carried out by an authorized KTM dealer.

Limited Rally Edition: WP XPLOR PRO Cone Valve, 270 mm, Akrapovic, Tech Pack Standard - EUR 21,990

Alongside the standard 890 Adventure R, KTM again offers a limited Rally Edition for MY2026 - and it is a substantially different motorcycle. Instead of the standard WP XPLOR components, it uses WP XPLOR PRO suspension from the racing program. The fork’s Cone Valve technology uses a conical valve body to regulate oil flow progressively, adapting more effectively to different impact speeds and providing greater resistance to bottoming. Suspension travel is 270 mm front and rear, 30 mm more than the standard R. Ground clearance is 303 mm and seat height 910 mm.

The Tech Pack is standard on the Rally: Rally mode, bidirectional Quickshifter+, cruise control, and Motor Slip Regulation. It also gets an Akrapovic slip-on muffler, Rally seat, Factory Racing footpegs, heavy-duty rims in 2.15 x 21 and 4.00 x 18-inch sizes, carbon-fiber tank protectors, and a Supersprox Stealth rear sprocket. Production takes place in Mattighofen, Austria. Global production is limited, although KTM has not published the number for MY2026. The MY2024 run comprised 700 motorcycles worldwide and sold out immediately. List price is EUR 21,990 plus ancillary charges.

Handling: Uncompromising Off-Road, Surprisingly Good on Pavement - The Middleweight Benchmark

The R has a loyal following. The underlying idea is simple: if you cannot reach a place on an 890 Adventure R, you probably cannot reach it on an adventure bike at all. The 240 mm suspension, Mitas enduro tires, Offroad ABS, and generous ground clearance make its priorities obvious. What is surprising is how well it also works on pavement. The geometry is designed around dirt stability, yet translates into genuinely good asphalt handling.

Direct rivals include the BMW F 900 GS, starting at EUR 13,790 plus ancillary charges, with 105 hp, similar off-road focus, and more comfort; the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin from EUR 16,449 with 102 hp and optional DCT, but a different overall positioning; and the Yamaha Tenere 700 from EUR 11,624 with 73 hp, less weight, and less power. Between the 790 and 1100 classes, the 890 Adventure R occupies its own niche: more off-road focus than the 790, less weight than the 1100-class machines, and by far the sportiest suspension in this price range.

Cost: EUR 16,985, Four-Year Warranty, 15,000 km Service

The 890 Adventure R costs EUR 16,985 including ancillary charges, while the limited Rally Edition starts at EUR 21,990. The roughly EUR 5,500 premium buys WP racing suspension, an Akrapovic exhaust, the Tech Pack as standard, and exclusivity. Whether that is justified depends entirely on use. Riders who genuinely ride fast off-road should choose the Rally. Riders mixing pavement and gravel are better served by the standard R.

KTM provides up to four years of Premium Manufacturer Warranty from MY2025, subject to scheduled servicing at an authorized KTM dealer. The Rally Edition is built in Mattighofen, Austria, like all KTM 890 models. The 15,000 km service interval applies to both versions.

Verdict

The KTM 890 Adventure R is the sportiest and most off-road-capable production middleweight adventure bike on the market. It delivers 105 hp, 100 Nm, 240 mm of suspension travel, Mitas Enduro Trail tires, Offroad ABS, Demo Mode, and up to four years of warranty. If you want still more, buy the Rally Edition - assuming you can still find one.
